How this check works

What happens when you press Check.

  • One GET request from our edge server to the URL, like a browser opening the page.
  • Redirects are followed one by one, up to 10, and each step is timed.
  • 10 second timeout. No answer in that time counts as a timeout.
  • We identify ourselves as DownStatus in the User-Agent. Some sites block that.
  • Private addresses are blocked: localhost and internal networks cannot be checked.
  • URLs are not saved. The result lives in the link you share.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a site show 403 here but open in my browser?

Many sites block requests from servers and data centers to stop bots. Our check comes from a server, so it can get 403 while people see the site normally. Check the service status page or user reports to confirm whether real visitors have problems.

What is the difference between 301 and 302?

A 301 says the page has moved for good, so browsers and search engines switch to the new address. A 302 is temporary: the old URL stays the main one and search engines keep it in the index. Use 301 for permanent moves such as HTTP to HTTPS.

Does a 5xx code mean the site is down for everyone?

Usually yes: a 5xx means the server failed to handle the request, so other visitors are likely affected too. A single 5xx can be a short glitch, so check again after a minute. For popular services, compare with user reports on their status page.

How many redirects is too many?

One redirect is normal, for example from http to https. Two or three, such as http to https to www, still work but add delay to the first visit. Longer chains slow pages down, and Google follows at most 10 hops, which is also where our check stops.

Is this tool free?

Yes. The check is free and needs no sign-up. To keep it fast for everyone, there is a limit of 10 checks per minute from one IP address.
